Translating Joyce Lussu
Thursday 13th February 2020
7-9pm, Clubroom
CCA, Glasgow
During this workshop we will translate the work of Italian anti-fascist and anti-imperialist activist, poet, writer and translator Joyce Lussu and her thoughts about women, ecology, political freedom & poetry, explored in an intuitive, creative and collaborative way. Marta Fontana will encourage intuitive translation inspired by Joyce Lussu's translating method.
We will follow her way of translating the words of poets who were persecuted and imprisoned because of their political thoughts in many different countries of the world. After the Second World War, Lussu travelled around the world to meet persecuted authors and poets in prison, translating their words in Italian. She used intermediary languages, drawings, gestures and intuitive communication in order to be able to translate a range of languages and their most sensitive thoughts about freedom and life.
No previous knowledge of Italian language required, just open minded attitude and interest in sharing words, drawings, signs, thoughts.
